So you feel good cause you are the best paddler? You started young? You have the best boat, paddle, all the cool gear and you always get everybody’s attention? Girls Love you? You would run anything… the bigger the risk the better? BS!. This picture proves we all are just commercialized water addicts. So we ere competing to win fancy gear? A new kayak computer designed, with high technology plastic? Anybody with a kayak is nobody, we all are not real…

“Cabecares” are the Aborigines who live near the Pacuare River in Costa Rica. Their way of transportation since ever, ever… ever since the beginning of the times is the Balsa wood boat. Balsa is the lightest wood in the world. They hike uphill, carrying on the shoulders the “kanhuko” (word pronounced similar to “kayak”, “thanks” to the interaction with white people), then do whatever they travelled for and to come back they just jump into the river and float, manoeuvring trough the rapids. They start as soon as they learn how to swim (only way to cross the River at most points). I have seen 6 or 7 years old Cabecares surfing waves with this.

This was someday in late 2003 or early 2004. Something curious: that is the entrance to a Class IV rapid called “Rapid of The Indian”
The point is: when you are real all you need is water and something to ride on
